Alvvays is a Canadian indie pop band originating from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and currently based in Toronto, Ontario. The band name (pronounced “Always”) is spelt that way after they had discovered the existence of another band (and a menstrual pad company) called Always.
The group consists of vocalist Molly Rankin, guitarist Alec O'Hanley, keyboardist Kerri MacLellan (Rankin’s friend since kindergarten), bassist Brian Murphy and drummer Sheridan Riley. Phil MacIsaac, the original drummer, left in 2016.
Alvvays' singer-songwriter Molly Rankin is the daughter of John Morris Rankin, a fiddler member of the family country group The Rankin Family. She met guitarist and songwriting partner Alec O'Hanley (former member of Two Hours Traffic) during her teens. The two of them began working on music together, leading to the release of Rankin’s self-released debut EP, She (2010).
Alvvays formed in 2011 and shared their debut single, “Adult Diversion,” in 2013. The following year the group released their eponymous debut album through Polyvinyl Record Co.
Their sophomore album, Antisocialites, was released in 2017.
