Allie X
Alexandra Ashley Hughes, better known by her stage name Allie X, is a Canadian singer-songwriter.
Allie first started her career under the stage name Allie Hughes in Toronto around 2006, performing indie pop, indie rock, jazz and electronic influenced music. She released her album, Waiting for the Prize the same year. She then proceeded two further releases, including another album Ladies and Gentlemen in 2009 and an extended play titled Allie Hughes in 2010. All of the aforementioned releases were released independently and sold mainly at live shows.
In 2011-2012, Allie started performing under the stage name ALX. Under this name, the single “I Will Love You More” was released in March of 2012. Despite ALX only having only one official song release, numerous unreleased original songs from this era were performed live during 2012 shows such as “Chad Redux”, “Homebound” and “Phantom”. The ALX project eventually came to an end in late 2012. In July 2013, Allie decided to leave Canada and move to Los Angeles to pursue a full-time career as a singer-songwriter, signing a publishing deal. During 2013 she spent time learning about sound design and production and worked with numerous songwriters and producers including Billboard and Cirkut, who she met that year.
In early 2014, Allie released her official debut single under the Allie X name, “Catch”. Upon release, the song received praise from multiple sources: Jamieson Cox from TIME magazine said the track “shines with a level of polish and craft that’s remarkable” while fellow singer Katy Perry also praised the track on Twitter, calling it her “spring jam”. Prior to the release of Allie’s extended play, CollXtion I, two other singles, “Prime” and “Bitch”, were put out by the singer in 2014. CollXtion I was released the following year in early 2015.
In February 2016, Allie released the song “Old Habits Die Hard”. In May 2016 she released another song called “Too Much to Dream” and announced a project titled CollXtion II: Ʉnsolved, which saw her release a collection of demos and songs on Spotify, in order to shortlist the songs her fans wanted to see on her debut album as Allie X, CollXtion II. CollXtion II: Ʉnsolved ended in November 2016, with Allie saying no new music would be released until CollXtion II is out. CollXtion II began to be teased by Allie in February 2017, and in April, Allie released “Paper Love” as the lead single from the album. The album was later released in June 2017.
In June 2018, Allie released “Focus” as the first single from her extended play Super-Sunset, followed by the release of the second single “Not So Bad in LA” in July 2018. The following Monday, Hughes announced the extended play to be released in the upcoming fall, alongside with a four date promotional tour called The Super Sunset Xperience. In December 2018, Allie released Super-Sunset (Analog), a live version of Super Sunset.
In September 2019, Allie released “Fresh Laundry” along with a music video for her second full length album to be released as Allie X, Cape God. Throughout the next 3 months 3 more singles were released, with “Rings a Bell” in October, “Regulars” in November, and “Love Me Wrong” in December. On December 16, 2019, Allie announced the pre-order, artwork, and title for Cape God, through her social media accounts. The single “Devil I Know” was released in January 31, 2020 and the full album was released the next month.
