Norma Jean Martine
Norma Jean Martine is an American singer-songwriter, born in Middletown, NY but currently based in London.
Born March 21 1991, she was immersed in music from a young age with her mother taking her to blues bars in upstate New York, where introductions to the likes of Etta James, Nina Simone and Billie Holiday formed the basis for what would later become her signature emotive blues style. While Martine initially moved to London in 2011 to study at Queen Mary University, she later dropped out in order to focus on music full time, and – exactly one year later – found herself signed with BMG Chrysalis for publishing. A record deal with Universal Music’s Vertigo/Capitol division followed soon after, and she began writing not only for her own solo debut but for others, placing songs with artists such as Ronan Keating, Ashley Roberts, Lena and Giorgia. While continuing to work on music, Martine supported the likes of Gaz Coombs, Lissie and Tom Odell, and played festivals including Latitude, Montreux and the Calling Festival throughout 2013 and 2014.
The first taste of Martine’s solo music was the storming Joel Pott-cowrite “No Gold” in mid-2014, debuted through commercials for The CW in the US and Fox 8 in Australia and later reworked for her album. However, her first official release wouldn’t appear until over a year later, when the Animals EP was released in November 2015 led by the title track. An official release for “No Gold” followed in June 2016, with its parent album Only In My Mind initially earmarked for a September release but ultimately debuting in January 2017 (with a limited release in the UK only preceding it in October of the previous year).
