Saweetie
Saweetie is an American rapper and songwriter hailing from Hayward, California. She was born Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper on July 2nd, 1993, and was largely raised in the Bay Area but finished high school in Sacramento.
Harper grew up listening to the likes of 2Pac, Biggie and Lil Kim and first started performing in high school at a talent show during Black History Month. She would later go on to perform covers of other artists' hit songs, such as A$AP Rocky’s “F**kin' Problems,” during her time at the University of Southern California, where she studied communications and business.
After graduating, Saweetie started to focus more on her rap career. – She finally burst onto the rap scene in 2017, when an Instagram clip of the rapper performing her freestyle “ICY GIRL” went viral. The studio release of the track has since accumulated more than 126 million streams across all platforms. – In June 2018, the single was certified Gold after selling over 500,000 units in the US.
On March 16th, 2018, Saweetie released her highly-anticipated debut EP High Maintenance after signing to Warner Bros. Records in February of the same year. The record features production from the rapper’s cousin, veteran producer Zaytoven.
It was around that time, too, that Harper started dating Atlanta native and Migos‘ member Quavo. She would later be featured on the rapper’s 2018 solo album Quavo Huncho.
Almost exactly one year after the release of her debut, Saweetie dropped her sophomore EP, ICY, on March 29th, 2019. The project boasts only one feature, Quavo, who has two appearances on the record.
