Interesting name eh. A girl group named after a day of the week. The Saturdays are a British-Irish girl group made up of 5 gals which comprises of Una Healy, Mollie King, Frankie Sandford, Vanessa White and Rochelle Wiseman. Among them, Frankie and Rochelle are from the now defunct S Club 8. (also known as S Club Juniors) The Saturdays is under the record label, Fascination Records, a sub-division of Polydor records. Fascination Records houses Girls Aloud and Sophie Ellis Bextor too. =)
Their Debut album, 'Chasing Lights', has produced 4 UK top 10 singles: "If This Is Love". "Up", "Issues" and "Just Can't Get Enough". (Released in chronological order) The band was chosen to release the 2009 Comic Relief single, "Just Can't Get Enough", which is a cover of a Depeche Mode song. This song is included in the re-issue of their album on 16th March 2009.
Brief History
Being signed to Fascination Records, a sub-label of Polydor Records, a pop sound is expected in a good way. The genres being labelled for them are Pop, electropop, dance pop. Very me. =) Their debut album, 'Chasing Lights', was recorded during May and June 2008 with input from multiple producers and writers. The group supported Girls Aloud on their Tangled Up Tour before the release of their debut single, "If This Is Love", in July 2008 and peaked at number 8 on the UK Singles Chart.
2nd single, "Up", was released in October 2008 and peaked at number 5. This track was also featured on a US trailer for Ugly Betty. And in the same month, 'Chasing Lights' was released to generally positive reviews by critics. The album peaked at number 9 on the UK Album Chart and has been certified gold since. 3rd single, "Issues", was released in January 2009 and peaked at number 4.
And in January, it is annouced that their 4th single would be a cover of the Depeche Mode song, "Just Can't Get Enough". It was released as one of the official Comic Relief 2009 singles. It peaked at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart, just behind Flo Rida's 'Round Round', making this the first Comic Relief single not to reach number 1 since 1994. Which I think is quite damned cause it's a charity single, it should hit number 1. I think 'JCGE' is better than 'Round Round', downright annoying.
The girls have also confirmed that they will be on tour, headlining themselves. Called "The Work Tour", the girls also stated that the start of the tour will coincide with the release of their fifth single, "Work". YAY!!!! I LURVE "Work". Read tomorrow's The Satudays album review for details. =)
What's In Store for the future
The girls revealed that they will be releasing their second studio album before the end of 2009 and excited to be writing some of the tracks themselves. Looking forward to it. =)
